  51. JAILBIRD is an entertaining program which allows you to create 
  52. replicas of "vanity" license plates on your screen, and optionally 
  53. print them out on a printer. You can configure your plate for any of 
  54. the 50 United States. Each state includes the current state slogan. 
  55. You can configure your own colors for the on-screen display, and also 
  56. print those colors if you have a supported color printer.
  57.  
  58. JAILBIRD should operate on virtually any computer system which has a 
  59. VGA monitor and card (or better) and a mouse.

  83. QUICK START: 
  84. ------------
  85. In order to make full use of all of JAILBIRD's features, you will need 
  86. to completely read this short documentation file. But if you want to 
  87. start using JAILBIRD quickly, simply switch to the JAILBIRD 
  88. subdirectory, type JAILBIRD and press the [ENTER] key. The opening 
  89. screen will be displayed, and pressing any key will then start the 
  90. program.

  92. At any time, you can click on the QUIT button to quit the program.

  100. PRINTING THE DOCUMENTATION:
  101. ---------------------------
  102. This documentation file is formatted for 70-characters per line, and 
  103. 60-lines per page. To print the documentation, you can simply issue 
  104. the following command from the DOS command line:
  105.  
  106.      COPY JAILBIRD.DOC PRN
  107.  
  108. The documentation file contains form-feed characters, so it can also 
  109. be printed by various printing utilities.
  110.

  112. THE MAIN INPUT WINDOW
  113. ---------------------
  114.  
  115. When you first start the program, you will be placed in the input 
  116. window located above the default license plate. This is where you type 
  117. in your own personalized information. The input window contains 6 
  118. fields for information. The first field is required, the last 5 are 
  119. optional.
  120.  
  121. The first field is for your state, and will accept the 2-character 
  122. abbreviation for your state.
  123.  
  124. The second field is where you type in the vanity plate text. This 
  125. field will accept 10 characters, and will be displayed in ALL CAPS 
  126. (all capitol letters).
  127.  
  128. The third field is for the year, which will be displayed in the upper 
  129. right corner of your plate. This does not have to be the current year; 
  130. you can use any year that you like. If left blank, the upper-right 
  131. corner of the plate will also be blank.
  132.  
  133. The fourth field is for the month, which will be displayed in the 
  134. upper left corner of your plate. Again, this does not have to be the 
  135. current month. If left blank, the upper-left corner of the plate will 
  136. also be blank.

  138. The fifth field can be used to add text to the upper portion of the 
  139. license plate "bracket". If this field is left blank, the upper plate 
  140. bracket will not be included on the plate.
  141.  
  142. The sixth field can be used to add text to the lower portion of the 
  143. license plate "bracket". If left blank, the lower plate bracket will 
  144. not be included on the plate.

  146. Once you have completed all 6 fields, your customized personal plate 
  147. will be displayed on the screen. Alternately, you can click on the 
  148. SHOW PLATE button at any time *AFTER* inputting the State to display 
  149. the plate. (The State is the only mandatory field).

  157. PRINTER SETUP (& COLOR SETUP)
  158. -----------------------------
  159.  
  160. To set up the system for your printer, and to customize the on-screen 
  161. colors, use your mouse to click on the PRINTER SETUP button. This will 
  162. take you to the printer/color setup screen. Please note that the 
  163. terminology used in this section, as well as other parts of the 
  164. program, is intended to imply that you are in a license plate pressing 
  165. factory.

  167. This screen has 7 basic parts: PRESS SETTINGS, PRESS TYPE, MODE, PRESS 
  168. LOCATION, CURRENT FONT, Custom Color Configuration, and the Press 
  169. Setup Room (that's were all the *real* action takes place.....but it's 
  170. private, and only JAILBIRD employees have access to it).
  171.  
  172. PRESS SETTINGS - This group of "levers" control most of the visual 
  173. aspects of the license plate: Landscape, Print State, Print Motto, 
  174. Shade Frames, and Use User-defined Colors. The first three are turned 
  175. on by default, and you can activate/deactivate any of the "levers" by 
  176. clicking on them. When levers are active (ON), their handles will be 
  177. green; when they are inactive (OFF), the handles will be red.
  178.  
  179. Landscape is active by default, which causes the license plate to be 
  180. turned "sideways" when printed.
  181.  
  182. Print State is active by default, which causes the STATE to be printed 
  183. on the upper-center portion of the plate.
  184.  
  185. Print Motto is also active by default, which causes the state's motto 
  186. to be displayed on the lower-center portion of the plate.
  187.  
  188. Shade Frames is inactive by default. If you activate this option, the 
  189. bracket areas of the printed plate will be "shaded" rather than plain.
  190.  
  191. Use User-Defined Colors is also inactive by default. If you activate 
  192. this option, you can customize the on-screen colors using the color 
  193. palette at the bottom of the screen.
  194.  
  195. Epson Compatible Color is also inactive by default. If you intend to 
  196. use the program with an Epson-Compatible "Color" printer, you will 
  197. need to turn this option ON.

  200. PRESS TYPE - This is for selecting the printer type that you have. 
  201. Simply click on the button next to the type of printer that you have. 
  202. The "active" selection will turn green; all others will be red.

  210. MODE - This option will let you modify the various printing modes 
  211. available for the selected printer. As you switch from one printer 
  212. type to another, the available "mode" options will change accordingly. 
  213. The button for the default setting will be green, and the other 
  214. buttons will be red. You may need to experiment with this setting if 
  215. you are not sure of the printing resolution that your printer is 
  216. capable of.

  219. PRESS LOCATION - this option tells the program where to find the 
  220. License Plate "press" - this is actually the location of your printer. 
  221. The program will support printers on LPT1 and LPT2. Simply click on 
  222. the appropriate one.

  225. CURRENT FONT - this is a button bar, which you can select to change 
  226. fonts for both the screen and printout. Please note that simply 
  227. clicking on this button will not work - you need to click and hold 
  228. down the mouse button to open the window, and then move the mouse up 
  229. and down the list to highlight the desired font.
  230.  
  231. The shareware version comes with 2 fonts included, and there are 8 
  232. more available (supplied automatically with the registered version). 
  233. The additional (optional) fonts will have a "*" character next to 
  234. them. You can still select these fonts even if you don't have the 
  235. associated font files, but your plate will simply be blank.
  236.  
  237. The additional font files are available for evalutaion if you feel it 
  238. necessary to see all fonts before registering the product. You can 
  239. obtain them by downloading them from our BBS at 317-784-2147, from the 
  240. RMH COMPUTER SERVICES area. Alternately, you can order them directly 
  241. from us on disk at a cost of $5.00US. Mail your request, and a check 
  242. for $5.00 to RMH Computer Services, PO Box 657, Beech Grove IN 
  243. 46107-0657. (No telephone orders accepted for the font files).

  246. CUSTOM COLOR CONFIGURATION - this is the palette where you can modify 
  247. the on-screen and printout color selection. You can modify the PLATE 
  248. COLOR, PLATE TEXT, BRACKET COLOR, and BRACKET TEXT. Simply click on 
  249. the available colors for each item.

  252. PRESS SETUP ROOM - As stated above, this is where the *real* work on 
  253. your plate takes place. Only JAILBIRD employees are allowed in here, 
  254. and the door knob has a security device installed on it to prevent 
  255. unauthorized access to the Press Setup Room!

  258. RETURN - Once you have finished your setup configuration, use your 
  259. mouse and click on the RETURN button to go back to the main screen.

  267. PRINT
  268. -----
  269. Clicking on the PRINT button will begin the process of "pressing" your 
  270. custom license plate. Once this process starts, you can abort it by 
  271. pressing your [ESC] key.

  274. QUIT
  275. ----
  276. At any time during the program, you can quit by clicking on the QUIT 
  277. button. This will close down the program and return you to the DOS 
  278. prompt.

  281. ABOUT
  282. -----
  283. Clicking on the ABOUT button will display a window that contains 
  284. information about the program and it's creator and publisher. To exit 
  285. the window, click on the small block in the upper-left corner of the 
  286. window.

  289. REG INFO
  290. --------
  291. Clicking on the REG INFO button will display a window that contains 
  292. information on how to register your copy of JAILBIRD. To exit the 
  293. window, click on the small block in the upper-left corner of the 
  294. window.  For additional information about registering your copy of 
  295. JAILBIRD, see the file REGISTER.TXT that was included with the 
  296. program.

  299. SHOW PLATE
  300. ----------
  301. Clicking on the SHOW PLATE button will display the plate with the 
  302. current input fields. This can be done at any point *AFTER* inputting 
  303. the State.

  346. telephone for a period of not less than 90 days. Support may also be

  348. technical problems in the software are discovered within 90 days of 
  349. registration, RMH Computer Services will, at their option, either 
  350. provide a workable solution to the problem or a refund of the 
  351. registration cost. After the initial 90 days, RMH Computer Services is 
  352. only obligated to make reasonable effort to supply a revised copy of 
  353. the software.
